Riddle of Reality and Identity

The project is called ‘Riddle of Reality and Identity’. It contains a hyperreal CG image and a 3 seconds animation. The hyperreal GGI is reconstructed using 3ds Max based on a frame in Ghost in the Shell (Mamoru, 1995). The frame is a one-point perspective view of a bachelor apartment, which belongs to a trash truck driver. The driver’s augmented brain was hacked and inserted false memory to believe that he was hacking into his wife’s ghost to get his daughter back after their divorce. However, he was actually assisting a crime of hacking into a government official. He never has a wife or a daughter. Starting from perspective matching and constructing massing models, the CGI aims to restitute every detail in the hand-drawn anime. After having a white clay detailed model close enough to the anime frame. Lighting, colour, texture and traces of life are tested and added into the scene to bring it closer to reality. The glitching effect was added to the TV screen, to strengthen the mystery and ambiguous atmosphere of the concept – Riddle of Reality and Identity.

Nowadays, not just architecture, all aspects in our society are more and more rely on the machine. The relationship between humans and machines should be reconsidered. On the other hand, the whole society is trending to pursuit more and more hyperreal CG images and movies, as if that is the main standard of popularity and influences. With NFT rising, the digital and virtual world is starting to devour our sense of reality. People are facing the question of identity and the danger of dehumanisation and displacement.
