Wollert was the first in Australia to complete a phytocapping study. It took a five-year study to have the caps approved by the Victorian Environment Protection Authority. This was later followed up by the Australian Alternative Cover Assessment Program (A-ACAP), to which the Wollert Landfill also participated. Phytocapping system includes 1300 mm uncompacted cover soils and 200mm of quarry scalps. The phytocap is then planted with native grasses, trees, and shrubs. These plants are hand selected to ensure optimal establishment. The plants on the phytocap absorb and transpire water on the cap, preventing ingress into the waste. This transpiration reduces leachate and gas production. The capping system has essentially become a haven for native animals, many of which have lost their natural habitat due to urban encroachment. Kangaroos, wedge-tailed eagles, hawks, echidnas, and blue-tongue lizards call the Wollert site home. The first goanna in decades has also recently been spotted on site. Also, the phytocap helps us rehabilitate the land that was onced landfilled and return it back to a natural habitat. This supports us in fulfilling our general environmental duty.
